BASIL

a highly aromatic herb, with a flavor resembling cloves. The common variety is seldom made use of, but there is a large type whose leaves are employed very generally in flavoring sauces and soups, especially Green and Mock Turtle soup. Basil vinegar is made by steeping the leaves in vinegar.
