a "mixed drink" now largely sold in bottles. The best known are the Manhattan and Martini--the former being composed of whisky and vermouth, and the latter of gin and vermouth--in addition to bitters, syrup, etc., in each case. A "dry" cocktail is one made without syrup.

The word is also applied to a service of oysters, etc., in a glass with a special sauce.
