JEWELERS' RED or ROUGE

a fine powder of metallic oxide, used for polishing gold and silver. It is obtained chiefly by calcining either yellow oxalite of iron or sulphate or iron. The coarser, darker residue of the calcination of sulphate of iron, used for the same purpose, is known as Red Crocus.
