POLLACK, or Pollock

a fish of the same genus and about the same size as the cod, which is much esteemed fresh, salted, etc. The best of the several varieties is the Common Pollack, with brown-green back and white belly. The Black Pollack, or Coal Fish, named for its black back, ranges from New York northward.
