SHELLBARK

a variety of hickory, so titled because the old trees "shell off" their bark in long strings. The use of the term as a name for the nut itself is confusing, as two varieties of the hickory tree are "shellbarks," yet the nuts differ, one being thin-shelled and the other thick-shelled.
