TOWEL GOURD, or Loofah

a fruit resembling a large, long cucumber, grown in several of the Southern States and warm climes generally. When dried and freed from its hull and seeds, its network interior becomes the "loofah" of commerce, used as a rough sponge or flesh brush. The fibre is also employed for insoles, surgical bandage material, etc.
