"Show Me" Dessert (From Missouri)

1/4 cup butter 1/4 cup sugar 2 beaten egg yolks 3 tablespoons milk 1/2 cup flour 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon baking powder Mix all ingredients as for cake, spread in a pie pan. Whip whites of the 2 eggs, add 1/4 cup sugar extra and beat well. Spread on top of pie, sprinkle 1 cup almonds over it. Bake in slow oven, 25 minutes. Serve with whipped cream. Almonds should be coarsely chopped.

For the Modern Kitchen

A thin butter cake baked under its own meringue, closer to a Swedish toscakaka or a Baltimore-style meringue cake than to a pie. The batter is stiff and the quantity small, so the pan you choose decides whether this works.
