Cold Mate

Tetre Plainsmen and travelers drink their maté cold when hot water is not available. This is called tetre, and in the rural districts of Latin America you'll find many people whose devotion to it is constant and keen. Very often it's a long drink prepared in a polished and decorated cow's horn, often bound with silver, swinging from a chain like a stirrup cup. Although usually drunk plain, both cold and hot maté is occasionally spiked with rum or curaçao, and the Germans put up the herb for use in Germany, already mixed with alcoholic flavors, which to our way of thinking don't add anything.
