About the Book

Church & Dwight Co. of New York have been selling bicarbonate of soda under the Arm & Hammer mark since the 1860s. This is their recipe book, copyrighted 1915.

It is an unusually opinionated pamphlet. It argues at length against buying baking powder at all — you can make your own leavening with soda and sour milk, and the company would rather you did — and it opens with an essay called “Sense and Soda” comparing the efficient housewife to the efficient manufacturer scrapping out-of-date machinery.

It also prints a perpetual calendar covering 1908 to 1915, a table of weights and measures, and a good deal of advice about cleaning.
