To dye cotton cloth black
Take a quantity of M<??>, nuts, which, in Bengal, are sold at 2s. per cwt.; and boil, them, in water, in close earthern vessels, with the leaves of the tree. During the boiling, a whitish substance, formed from the mucilage and oil of the nuts; will rise to the surface; this must be taken off and preserved. The cloth intended to be black, must be printed with this scum, and then dyed; after which let it be passed through lime, water, when the printed figures will be changed to a full and permanent black.
