A cookbook you were meant to finish yourself — every recipe page faces a blank leaf for your own, and the woman who owned this copy filled eleven of them.

Plum Salad

Into a glass salad bowl put one-half pint each of greengages, stoned and cut in half, bananas, peeled and cut in slices, and any other fresh fruit that is at hand.

Sprinkle well with powdered sugar, cover and let stand one hour, then add one wineglass of syrup of preserved cherries, one of lemon juice, and the greengage kernels, blanched and cut in half. Cover again and let stand until required. Serve with whipped cream and sponge fingers. The cream and fingers should not be put on the salad, but should be served separately.
