JULEP

is a word which came into our language from the Persian, its Eastern prototype signifying "sweet drink." As "Jalap" it was formerly used in medicine to describe a mixture compounded to make some drug more palatable or convenient. In this country it now means a beverage in which either whisky or brandy are mixed with sugar, cracked ice and some flavor, generally mint.
