Colin Mackenzie’s Ten Thousand Receipts was the household encyclopedia of the nineteenth century: not a cookery book but a whole library of practical arts — agriculture, angling, bees, bleaching, brewing, book-keeping, dyeing, gilding, gardening, fireworks, medicine, and cookery among them.
Its promise was self-sufficiency: whatever needed doing about a house or a small trade, there was a receipt for it.
