Make Mine Steak!

A NATIONAL FOOD AND drink magazine recently reported, as the result of all sorts of exhausting polls in which everything was eaten and drunk by everybody between the ages of 6 and 66, that boys and girls aged from 6 to 16 went for turkey and ice cream while those from 16 to 66 said "Just give me a good thick, tender steak, a slab of apple pie, and a cup's coffee." While corned beef and cabbage was a serious contender, the favorite meat for all ages stayed fixed at steak, but even a hot dog picnic wasn't perfect unless topped off with coffee and apple pie-with a hunk of cheese obligatory, at least in Wisconsin, where it's against State law to serve pie in public without a wedge of some kind of local smearcase.

Everywhere from the pine woods picnics of Alabam' to a log-jam lunch in Minnesota folks agreed a steak tasted better when broiled right out in the open and either doused with some bottled sauce, or dotted with butter or treated to some private hot stuff like this:
