Calumet Baking Powder of Chicago sold itself as the independent — “NOT MADE BY THE TRUST” is printed on the cover — in an industry then fighting a long and bitter commercial war over alum, cream of tartar and phosphate leavenings.

The book carries the evidence on its own pages: the highest award at the first World's Pure Food Exposition, Coliseum, Chicago, November 1907; the Grand Prize and gold medal at Paris in 1912; and, listed in its own index, a section of court testimony.

Between the exhibits it is a genuinely useful book of tested recipes “repeatedly tested by and regularly used in the Calumet Baking Schools,” with a compilation of household hints.
