The Cook and Her Utensils (Can be removed)
can be removed to the dust-cart and emptied there. In country houses the dust-hole is generally of considerable size, and often communicates with an open cesspool, being intended to absorb the contents as they are discharged into it. This is better than the keeping the two apart, and at the same time exposed to the air; but it is by no means a healthy plan, and is not to be recommended. The cesspool is easily covered in, and may be readily emptied when necessary, by removing a stone set in a wooden or iron frame.
