Strawberry Fritters

Put some crushed strawberries, sweetened and flavoured to taste, between two thin strips of spongecake, moistened with Madeira. Coat them with a batter made of flour, egg, and milk, and fry them in hot lard. Dust with sugar, and serve hot.
