Fortune Cake

Cream 1 1/4 cupfuls sugar and 3/4 cupful butter; add juice and rind of half a lemon; sift in 2 cupfuls of flour, into which has been mixed 1/4 teaspoonful of baking-soda. Then add the stiffly beaten whites of 7 eggs, 1/2 cupful candied citron, 1/2 cupful blanched almonds. Mix the batter well, and last, add a ring, a dime, a thimble, and a heart.

For the Modern Kitchen

A rich white-cake batter — essentially a pound cake leavened by beaten whites alone — into which four fortune-telling charms are hidden before baking. The printed text stops at the charms, so pan, temperature and time are left to the cook.
