Laundry Soap

Use earthen dishes and shoe boxes. Dissolve 1 can of potash in 1 quart of cold water. Add 2 tbsp. of borax and set out to cool. Melt six lbs. of grease and strain through a cloth to remove all specks. Warm grease (not enough to burn finger.) Remove from fire and stir in slowly the dissolved potash. Add about 2 tablespoons of strong ammonia. Stir until it thickens. Then pour into shoe boxes lined with cotton cloth, and smooth out with knife. Cool in open air and cut before it gets hard.
