Household Hints

A few drops of camphor in the water to bathe the face, will prevent the shinning appearance which so many skins have, especially in warm weather.

A small point for the hostess whose wax candles show a propensity to rapid wasting, is to put them in the ice chest for fully twenty-four hours before using, will increase their burning time very appreciably. They want to be thoroughly chilled.

Discolorations caused by tea or careless washing, can be removed from cups and saucers by rubbing with damp salt.

Windows should be washed with warm water, using soap only when necessary, then dried with linen and polished with chamois. A raw potato and white brick rubbed on your zinc kitchen knives make them like new.

To take ink from white goods, take a small quantity of lemon salts and put on the spot, then steam the goods over boiling water until the salt is dissolved and the stain disappears. There are times when the flatiron refuses to move smoothly over the surface of the clothes. A few hints will be a help. Do not pour cold water over the too hot iron, it makes the surface rough. The real cause of its sticking comes from particles of starch and other substances clinging to the iron. To remedy this, have an old pan lined with thick brown paper, on which put a thick layer of salt. Rub the hot iron on this salt, with a good deal of pressure, wipe on a clean piece of cotton. When ironing starched clothes, a piece of beeswax in a cloth wiped over the iron, after cleaning with the salt, will be an improvement.
