There are a number of ornamental varieties, among them golden catalpa, a medium-sized tree with heartshaped leaves, golden in spring but turning green later; catalpa Bungei, from China, a dwarf with large glossy foliage: Japan catalpa, of medium-size, deep green glossy foliage. Flowers fragrant, cream colored, speckled with purple and yelloow; seed pods long and very narrow; flowers about four weeks later than catalpa speciosa.
