Silver Cake

1 cupful butter, 2 cupfuls sugar, 1/2 cupful sweet milk, whites of 8 eggs, 1 teaspoonful cream of tartar, 1/2 teaspoonful of soda, 2 1/2 cupfuls flour.

A butter cake leavened partly by beaten egg whites, given as a bare ingredient list in the fashion of the period. The method is assumed, so the notes below supply what the original leaves out.
