Fruit, Starch and Protein Menus: Introduction
Some believe that the menus should be planned so that one meal is made up of nothing but fruit, or perhaps some dairy products or nuts added to the fruit; another meal is to be composed of starch with vegetables; and the third is to consist of a protein with vegetables. Of course, it is not necessary to plan the meals in this way, but it is a good, simple method of solving the food problem. Many who labor manually will, however, find it difficult to maintain weight and strength when they take starch only once a day.
There are many plausible theories about eating, but those who are moderate in all things do not find it necessary to adhere to any rigid scheme.
There is no agreement among the advocates of the system of eating illustrated in this chapter as to the strictness necessary to obtain the best results.
Those who wish to adopt this method of eating should remember that the very sweet fruits are nourishing and heating to a surprising degree, and hence are fine in winter. The juicy fruits, melons and berries are especially good in summer.
