Simple Fruit Cake

1/2 cup Mazola 1/2 cup Karo, Blue Label 3/4 cup brown sugar 3 eggs, beaten 1/3 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup milk 13/4 cups bread flour 1/4 cup Argo or Kingsford's Cornstarch 1 teaspoon soda 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon each clove and allspice 1/3 teaspoon nutmeg 3/4 cup halved, moist raisins 1/4 cup chopped, candied orange or grape fruit peel 3/4 cup moist currants 1/2 cup finely sliced citron 1/4 cup chopped, candied pineapple (optional) Pour the Mazola into a mixing bowl, add the Karo, sugar and eggs. Beat till very smooth, then add the milk. Sift to gether the flour, cornstarch, soda, salt and spices. Add the fruit, stirring till well coated. Stir into the first mixture and transfer to a good-sized round pan, or two brick-shaped pans oiled with Mazola and lined with smooth, thin paper. Cover and steam for an hour, then bake in a slow oven, 325 degrees F. for a second hour. Keep two or three weeks before using.
