WHITE FLOWERING DOGWOOD

This is an American species, of spreading irregular form, growing from sixteen to twenty-five feet high. The flowers produced in spring before the leaves appear, are from three to three and a half inches in diameter, white and very showy. They begin to appear just as the magnolia flowers are fading, and are invaluable for maintaining a succession of bloom in the garden border or on the lawn. They also are very durable, lasting in favorable weather more than two weeks. Besides being a tree of fine form, its foliage is of a grayish green color, glossy and handsome, and in the autumn turns to a deep red, rendering the tree one of the most showy and beautiful objects at that season. It may be regarded, all things considered, as one of the most valuable trees for ornamental planting, ranking next to the magnolia among flowering trees, and only second to the scarlet oak (which it almost equals) in brilliant foliage in autumn.
